About

About Dr. Seghers

I am radically growth-oriented.

Again and again in my work, I find that people know more than they realize and are capable of more than they imagine. My greatest strength as a therapist and coach is in facilitating a process wherein people can develop and maximize their own innate strengths.

When clients come to see me, they are typically (though not always) in some form of distress or perplexity. What I emphasize, more than anything, are the inherent opportunities embedded in life’s challenges. For most people, most of the time, our most difficult and poignant struggles intrinsically point the way towards renewal and self-actualization. Healing, overcoming, and growth go hand-in-hand. Working with my clients to discover, and ultimately act on, these covert potentials is among the most dynamic and fulfilling aspects of the work I do.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I have developed expertise in scientifically-supported treatment modalities. As a life coach, my approach is rooted in positive (success- and happiness-oriented) psychology. My orientation is holistic. I work within a “whole-person” conceptual framework that encompasses thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors, as well as spirituality, physical activity, and nutrition. I emphasize context, process, and big picture thinking. I emphasize balance.

My approach is integrative. I incorporate a diverse range of techniques and approaches tailored to the demands of the situation and the unique personal styles of my clients. This affords me considerable flexibility. I draw heavily from psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) approaches to psychotherapy, as well as from the Gestalt, constructivist, and humanistic traditions. In recent years, I have been excited to incorporate scientific findings in the arena of mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches, which I have found to be remarkably effective.

I have an extensive background in psychological research, where I specialized in the study of stress and serious mental illness. My doctoral research focused on the relationship between difficult, stressful, and adverse life events, on the one hand, and significant mental health outcomes such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, on the other. I have published and reviewed scientific papers for peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at international conferences.

I am an avid photographer, backpacker/mountaineer, and meditation practitioner. I am a Southern California native, and have been happily married for 11 years. Prior to beginning my graduate training in psychology, I worked for 5 years with a marketing agency in Irvine, California.
